"Genba Kanri"
is Japanese for "shop floor management" or "Workshop
Management." Genba Kanri is the system by which standards for running
the day-to-day business are established, maintained controlled and
improved. This Lean Manufacturing and TQM type program was first
introduced to the U.S. in the 90's, but is based on tried and true
Industrial Engineering Tools and Techniques. As suggested by
its name, it is useful in manufacturing and could also benefit other industries
and organizations committed to waste reduction and improvement. Genba Kanri
deals with
- Improving productivity and reducing costs;
- Identification and removal of seven waste or non-value added elements of
business (over production; waiting; defects/scrap/rework; unnecessary
inventory; inappropriate inventory; inappropriate processing; and
transporting and material movement);
- Value Stream Management
- Improving quality and reducing inventory;
- Developing personnel through team work and continuous improvement;
- Developing a working knowledge of techniques such as Kaizen, Six Sigma,
SQC, SMED, TPM and Poka Yoke; encouraging employee participation; and
sharing experiences with other like minded companies.
